Cyprus government announces reform of the prison system
The government of President Nikos Christodoulides has announced a major reform of the Cypriot prison system to address long-standing issues that have persisted for decades. According to the Minister of Justice, Marios Phytiris, the initiative is designed to move beyond temporary solutions and implement long-term structural changes.
The reform plan operates on two parallel tracks. The first focus is on immediate improvements to existing facilities, specifically targeting overcrowding, detention conditions, and the management of juvenile offenders. The second, more comprehensive component involves the construction of a new, modern correctional facility. This project is intended to meet European standards and the state's needs for the next 50 years, featuring specialized areas for education, work, and the separation of different categories of inmates.
Officials stated that this initiative reflects a broader commitment to the rule of law, aiming to balance public safety with human rights and the successful reintegration of offenders into society. The administration characterized this as a difficult but necessary responsibility that aims to modernize the correctional system beyond the current political term.
