Cyprus government announces demographic recovery measures
President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides has presented a comprehensive package of measures aimed at demographic recovery and supporting families. The initiative, broadcasted via a video message on November 1, 2026, emphasizes the government's commitment to creating financial and professional security for young people.
Key policy components include the allocation of 300 million euros toward housing schemes to facilitate home ownership for young families. Additionally, the government has increased birth grants to 1,000 euros for the first child, 1,500 euros for the second, and 2,000 euros for each subsequent child. Other implemented measures feature the expansion of maternity leave, increased child benefits, and the institutionalization of mandatory, free preschool education.
Building on recent tax reforms, the President announced that the government's next priority is the implementation of pension reform. These combined efforts aim to improve disposable income and provide sustainable support structures, enabling citizens to reconcile professional careers with family life more effectively.
