Lionel Messi avoids suspension despite yellow card limit in MLS
Lionel Messi will not face a suspension despite reaching the limit of five yellow cards during the current Major League Soccer season. The 39-year-old forward received his fifth caution in a 2-2 draw between Inter Miami and FC Cincinnati, an event that typically triggers an automatic one-match ban under league regulations.
However, Messi remains eligible to play in Inter Miami's upcoming fixture due to a specific league rule regarding disciplinary conduct. According to the MLS framework, players can have a yellow card deducted from their total if they participate in five consecutive matches without receiving further cautions. Having achieved this feat multiple times throughout the season, Messi qualifies for the exemption. This season, the Argentine star has recorded 25 goals and 13 assists in 29 appearances, maintaining his availability for the team's ongoing campaign.
