Cyprus police launch campaign against distracted driving
The Cyprus Police have announced a nationwide enforcement and awareness campaign aimed at curbing distracted driving. The initiative will run from Monday, November 2, 2026, through Sunday, November 8, 2026. During this week-long period, traffic officers will conduct intensified, targeted checks across the road network to identify and penalize drivers using mobile phones or other objects without hands-free devices.
This operation responds to alarming traffic statistics recorded between 2023 and 2025. According to police data, distracted driving is the leading cause of road accidents on the island, accounting for 22.1% of fatal collisions and 29.4% of serious traffic injuries. Officials emphasize that these figures highlight the critical necessity for drivers to adhere to safety regulations to mitigate risks on the road.
The authorities aim to improve road safety standards through both education and strict enforcement. Drivers are strongly urged to avoid using electronic devices while behind the wheel to prevent potential fines and ensure the safety of all road users.
