Eight killed in Israeli airstrikes across Gaza
At least eight people were killed on Sunday during a series of Israeli airstrikes targeting the Gaza Strip. The attacks were concentrated in both the northern and southern parts of the enclave, impacting civilian areas, including makeshift camps for displaced persons in Khan Yunis and residential buildings in Gaza City. Medical personnel at Nasser and Al-Shifa hospitals confirmed the fatalities, which included a four-year-old boy and, according to some reports, five Palestinian police officers.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated that these were targeted precision strikes aimed at Hamas fighters, specifically citing an operative in the south and others in the north. Military officials noted that the outcomes of these operations are currently being reviewed. Local sources report that the Khan Yunis strike specifically hit an area populated by displaced civilians.
These hostilities occur amidst heightened tensions, as Israel accuses Hamas of rearming and violating a ceasefire that has been in effect for a year. Conversely, Hamas denies these allegations, claiming that Israel is actively undermining the peace agreement. The situation remains volatile as both sides exchange accusations regarding the ongoing breakdown of stability in the region.
