New director assumes leadership of Cyprus Central Prisons
Former Brigadier Giorgos Ioannou is set to assume his duties as the new director of the Central Prisons in Cyprus on Monday, November 2, 2026. This leadership transition occurs during a critical period for the correctional institution, with Ioannou expected to be the first director to wear a uniform, signaling a focus on strict discipline for both staff and inmates.
Following the announcement, the ISOTITA prison guards' union expressed its support for the new director, pledging to act as allies in his efforts to modernize the facility. The union emphasized that the primary priorities must be the security of both guards and inmates, as well as the protection of staff dignity. The union also highlighted the necessity of building new prison infrastructure to meet European standards and move beyond simple confinement toward genuine rehabilitation.
Minister of Justice Costas Phytiris is expected to provide full support to the new director. The union stated its readiness to cooperate with both the Ministry and the new administration to implement necessary structural reforms, stressing that concrete, practical steps are required to turn a new page for the department.
