Cyprus Ministry of Agriculture presents 2027 budget
On November 2, 2026, the Cypriot Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment presented its proposed 2027 budget to the Parliamentary Finance Committee. The budget is set at 532 million euros, reflecting a 4% increase (18.7 million euros) compared to the 2026 allocation. When including co-funded EU projects like 'Thaleia 2021-2027', the total financial framework reaches 580 million euros, with Minister Christos Senekis outlining the strategic priorities to the legislature.
A significant portion of the budget, specifically 168 million euros, is dedicated to water supply—a record high for the ministry. This 18% increase in water-related expenditure is attributed to persistent drought conditions, which necessitated the deployment of mobile desalination units and the purchase of recycled water. Minister Senekis emphasized that the state is shifting toward a permanent reliance on desalination across Limassol, Larnaca, Dhekelia, and Paphos to ensure continuous supply regardless of seasonal rainfall levels.
Beyond water management, the government is prioritizing the reduction of production costs for farmers and livestock breeders, following 2.5 million euros in support schemes implemented in 2026. The ministry also plans to accelerate the 'Pay as You Throw' waste management system. The proposed budget now awaits formal legislative deliberation and final parliamentary approval.
