Fatal train collision in Toledo leaves 69 dead
On October 28, 2026, a major railway disaster occurred in Urda, within the province of Toledo, Spain. A passenger train operated by the state-owned Renfe collided with a stationary Iryo private train that had halted due to a failure in the electronic signaling system. The collision resulted in 69 confirmed fatalities, marking one of the deadliest rail incidents in Europe this century. Authorities have identified 66 of the victims, among whom are 12 foreign nationals from the United States, France, Canada, Japan, Tunisia, Portugal, Mexico, the Czech Republic, and Argentina. Three individuals—two Australian citizens and one Japanese national—remain missing.
This incident follows a previous major railway tragedy in Andalusia earlier in January 2026, which claimed 46 lives. Forensic and police teams are currently working to complete identification processes for the remaining victims. Investigators are focused on the signaling error that caused the Iryo train to stall, leading to the devastating impact on the same set of tracks.
