Civilians evacuated from Russian-controlled Oleshky under humanitarian truce
A six-day humanitarian ceasefire facilitated by US First Lady Melania Trump and the Pope allowed for the evacuation of civilians from the Russian-controlled town of Oleshky in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region. The truce, which lasted until midnight Moscow time on Sunday, represents the longest period of relative stability in the area since the full-scale Russian invasion began in 2022.
Ukrainian officials confirmed that residents traveled a complex route from the front line through Crimea to the Russian town of Anapa before reaching Ukrainian-held territory in the Chernihiv region. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy expressed gratitude for the mediation efforts, while Ukrainian Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets reported that 167 civilians were evacuated from threatened areas by the time the agreement concluded. Both Ukrainian and Russian human rights representatives noted that all obligations under the ceasefire were honored by both sides.
Following the expiration of the truce, there were no immediate signs of renewed hostilities. Officials from both countries are now exploring the possibility of establishing similar interaction mechanisms to facilitate further humanitarian efforts and protect the lives of civilians trapped in conflict zones.
