Family of murder victim protests parole of convicted killer in Ayia Napa
The family of Pantelis Antoniou, who was murdered in Ayia Napa in 2013, has expressed deep concern following the parole of his killer. The perpetrator, who was serving a life sentence for premeditated murder, was released on October 22, 2026, after completing 13 years in prison. The victim’s son, Kostas Antoniou, reported that the family learned of the release by chance, claiming they received no prior notification and were not provided an opportunity to express their views.
According to current regulations, inmates serving life sentences are eligible to apply for conditional release after 12 years of incarceration. Alexandra Lykourgou, chair of the Parole Board, stated that existing laws do not permit the board to consider the perspectives of victims' families, though she noted that the board has recommended legislative changes to address this issue in three previous reports. The family continues to seek answers regarding the motive for the original crime, stating that the convicted man showed no remorse for the killing of their father.
The victim's relatives remain deeply distressed, citing the lack of closure and ongoing fears for their safety following the sudden release. As the situation remains contentious, the case has highlighted a significant gap in the legal framework regarding victim rights in parole hearings.
