Israeli airstrikes continue in Gaza causing multiple casualties
Recent Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip have resulted in at least eleven confirmed deaths over two days. On Sunday, strikes in Gaza City and Khan Younis killed eight Palestinians, including five police officers. On Monday, subsequent airstrikes in Khan Younis and the town of Al-Mussadar resulted in three additional deaths and left several others wounded. The Israeli military confirmed striking militants in Khan Younis on Sunday but offered no further comment regarding the other incidents.
These hostilities occur amidst the ongoing deterioration of a US-brokered ceasefire established last year. Tensions remain high as Israel accuses Hamas of rearming and violating the agreement, while Hamas denies these allegations and claims Israel is actively undermining the peace process. Little progress has been made in negotiations, specifically concerning the disarmament of Hamas and the withdrawal of Israeli forces. Israeli troops currently occupy approximately two-thirds of the territory, forcing nearly all of the two million residents to live in overcrowded, damaged areas or makeshift tents. No formal resolution or de-escalation appears imminent as both sides continue to exchange accusations over the failure to advance the reconstruction of the region.
