Construction unions in Cyprus threaten strikes over foreign worker permit policy
Construction trade unions in Cyprus, specifically PEO, SEK, and DEOK, have officially expressed strong opposition to the Ministry of Labor's policy of renewing work permits for employees from third countries. The unions argue that these permits are being granted to contractors and subcontractors who have documented records of violating collective bargaining agreements and labor laws. They claim that the current uncontrolled approval process undermines employment stability and labor standards across the sector.
The unions are demanding an immediate halt to the granting of new permits for non-compliant employers and have requested a review of recent renewals for companies currently facing official labor complaints. Their list of requirements includes the implementation of stricter inspections at construction sites, particularly those involved in public works, and the re-establishment of technical committees that include representatives from both trade unions and employer organizations.
As a consequence of their dissatisfaction, the unions have warned of potential 'dynamic measures,' which they have indicated could include strikes, if their demands are not addressed by the authorities. They insist that the Ministry of Labor must conduct thorough verification of compliance with collective agreements before authorizing or renewing any work permits for foreign nationals.
