Unal Ustel rejects calls to stop energy activities in the Eastern Mediterranean
On November 2, 2026, the leader of the Turkish Cypriot administration, Unal Ustel, stated that his administration and Turkey would continue energy research activities in the Eastern Mediterranean. Ustel asserted that they possess legitimate rights to the region and do not require permission from any other entity to proceed with their operations.
This declaration follows recent diplomatic protests by the Republic of Cyprus, which filed formal complaints with the United Nations and the European Union regarding the presence of the research vessel 'Mediterranean Research 1' (Akdeniz Arastirma 1) in disputed waters. Ustel dismissed these diplomatic maneuvers as detached from reality, claiming they hinder peace efforts on the island. Meanwhile, Turkish media outlet Daily Sabah has reported on proposals for cooperation in the region, provided that the Republic of Cyprus acknowledges the existence of two separate states on the island. Additional tensions have been raised by plans for a natural gas pipeline between Turkey and the northern part of Cyprus.
Currently, the situation remains a point of intense diplomatic friction. The Turkish Cypriot side continues to push for recognition of its equal status, while the government in Nicosia remains committed to preventing unauthorized projects that challenge its sovereign rights in the exclusive economic zone.
