Amessi Demokratia Kyprou demands meeting with President over energy concerns
On November 2, 2026, the movement Amessi Demokratia Kyprou, led by Fidias Panayiotou, officially requested a meeting with President Nikos Christodoulides to discuss national energy policy. The organization criticized the Ministry of Energy’s response to its prior memorandum as technically insufficient, specifically regarding electricity supply security for 2030, pricing, storage, and grid management. This development follows a nationwide protest held on October 17, 2026.
The group expressed particular concern regarding the potential two-year delay in natural gas imports past 2029 and demanded an alternative contingency plan, including potential transitional exemptions from European regulations. Furthermore, they challenged the current plans for the Dhekelia power station, which involves decommissioning 360 MW of base-load capacity while replacing it with only 80 MW of peaking gas turbines. Amessi Demokratia Kyprou argues this strategy dangerously increases dependence on the Vasilikos power plant and highlights ongoing uncertainty surrounding the final costs and timelines for major electrical interconnectivity projects.
The organization maintains that the Ministry's cited price caps—500 euros per MWh for the day-ahead market and 1,000 euros per MWh for the balancing market—fail to protect consumers from excessive charges. They continue to call for a comprehensive and transparent national strategy to address these systemic risks.
