Investigation into match-fixing scandal within Greek basketball continues
Greek basketball is currently embroiled in a significant match-fixing scandal, with ongoing investigations involving legal representatives of major clubs and legendary figures of the sport. Margarita Thanou, legal representative for Panathinaikos BC, stated that the probe is still in its early stages and expects further matches to be scrutinized. She specifically highlighted disparities in free-throw statistics during recent finals, where Olympiacos BC reportedly had 63 more free throws, calling for systemic changes within the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK) ahead of the December 20 elections.
Meanwhile, basketball legend Panagiotis Giannakis appeared before an investigator at the Evelpidon court complex to provide testimony. The case involves allegations from witness Vangelis Tsapas, who claimed he bribed referee Tasos Piloidis to influence a 2018 game between Aris, then coached by Giannakis, and Faros Keratsiniou. Tsapas alleged that the referee ejected Giannakis as a favor to ensure a Faros victory, an event that led to the coach's dismissal from Aris. Authorities are actively evaluating these claims as the sport prepares for upcoming administrative leadership elections scheduled for December 20, 2026.
