Security measures at Larnaca synagogue face criticism over local impact
During a session of the House Finance Committee regarding the Ministry of Justice budget, AKEL member of parliament Andreas Pasiourtides raised concerns regarding the extensive security measures surrounding the synagogue in Larnaca. Pasiourtides argued that these measures, which have been in place for three years, are negatively affecting the local community and stifling economic activity.
The security protocols were significantly escalated following the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas. According to the statements made during the parliamentary discussion, an entire city block remains cordoned off, creating significant inconvenience for residents and local businesses. The parliamentarian compared the situation to the similar security environment surrounding the Israeli embassy in Nicosia.
The discussion highlighted a growing tension between the necessity of high-level security for diplomatic and religious sites and the daily needs of the surrounding Cypriot neighborhoods. While no specific policy changes were announced, the issue remains a subject of ongoing debate within the legislative process as authorities assess the balance between safety and local economic sustainability.
