Mass feline poisoning reported in Chlorakas cemetery area
The Movement of Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation has reported a series of mass feline poisonings in the vicinity of the Chlorakas cemetery in the Paphos district. The incidents began on October 20, 2026, when a local resident discovered a dying kitten that subsequently succumbed to toxic substances, likely rodenticide. To date, 12 deceased cats have been identified, although estimates from local activists suggest the actual death toll could reach 40, as many animals have vanished without a trace.
The organization has sharply criticized the authorities, alleging significant delays and inaction. A resident reportedly contacted the emergency number 112 on October 21 to request intervention from the Animal Police, but was informed that no action could be taken due to a lack of evidence. A formal written complaint was later filed with the police on October 29. The Ecologists argue that the absence of immediate evidence should have triggered an investigation rather than being used as a justification for inaction.
Beyond the animal welfare crisis, the party warned that the presence of toxic poisons in a public area poses a serious risk to human health, particularly for children. The Movement of Ecologists is currently demanding a thorough investigation into the handling of the case and calling for the strengthening of the Animal Police to ensure such incidents are addressed promptly.
