President Christodoulides denies involvement in early presidential election campaign
On November 2, 2026, President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides rejected accusations from political parties, specifically mentioning DISY and AKEL, regarding early election campaigning and government "handouts." Speaking at the Annual General Assembly of the Association of Major Developments in Nicosia, the President stated he has been hearing such criticism since taking office in March 2023.
Christodoulides characterized the criticism as contradictory, noting that his administration is simultaneously accused of excessive spending and insufficient policy measures. He clarified that he has no intention of engaging in a presidential campaign for the 2028 elections, asserting that the government remains focused on urgent national priorities. Key areas of concern cited include the ongoing Cyprus problem, internal governance reforms, and pension system restructuring.
While the President expressed respect for the right of political parties to initiate their own campaigns and offer criticism, he maintained that the government will not be distracted by such activities. He emphasized that his administration intends to stay committed to its legislative agenda rather than entering the political fray at this stage.
