Irregularities revealed in 1974 prisoner of war benefits
The Pancyprian Association of 1974 Prisoners of War has identified significant irregularities regarding the distribution of honorary annual allowances of €2,000. Following an audit by the Auditor General, it was discovered that at least six individuals were receiving benefits they were not entitled to, including a deserter captured long after the invasion and several others who lacked official prisoner status in Red Cross or government registers. As a result, the Association has already deleted approximately 15 members from its registry.
During a session of the House Refugees Committee, Association President Vasos Christou alleged that specific politicians had intervened to facilitate the enrollment of individuals who were merely enclaved persons rather than prisoners of war. He reported that two such individuals admitted they were assisted by political parties to secure the allowance despite lacking the required documentation. DIKO MP Zacharias Koulias noted that some individuals captured in 1974 were offered choices by Turkish forces that may have prevented their formal registration as prisoners, potentially explaining some discrepancies.
Parliamentary members have formally urged Christou to present his evidence to the police for further investigation. The committee discussed the necessity of recovering funds improperly paid to non-eligible claimants. The investigation remains ongoing as the Association continues to verify its internal records against official lists.
