Trial of suspended Paphos mayor continues in Criminal Court
The trial of the suspended Mayor of Paphos, Phaidonas Phaidonos, is currently underway at the Paphos Criminal Court. The defendant faces five serious charges, including rape, indecent assault on a woman, assault causing actual bodily harm, and the administration of substances capable of neutralizing a person's power of resistance. Phaidonos has entered a plea of not guilty to all allegations.
Legal proceedings recently focused on the testimony of a senior police officer from the force's headquarters, who investigated the original complaint. The court previously concluded a lengthy three-day cross-examination of the complainant, during which the defendant was removed from the courtroom to ensure the witness's mental composure. The trial, which has been ongoing with several prosecution witnesses, is expected to conclude before the end of 2026.
Upcoming sessions are scheduled for November 5 and November 10. The court is awaiting the testimony of a local businessman who has been unable to appear due to illness, leaving his potential participation uncertain. The defense team, led by lawyers Christos Pourgourides and Nontas Korakides, continues to cross-examine prosecution witnesses as the court works toward a verdict.
