Appeals court mandates immediate prison time for animal killing
On October 30, 2026, the Cyprus Court of Appeal issued a unanimous decision overturning a lower court's ruling regarding an animal cruelty case. The court upheld a two-month prison sentence for an individual convicted of the illegal killing of an animal but revoked the previous decision to suspend the execution of that sentence for three years.
Despite the defendant having a clean criminal record and being a father of many children, the Court of Appeal ruled that these mitigating factors were insufficient to justify the suspension of the jail term. The court emphasized the severity of the act, marking a notable departure from common judicial practices in Cyprus, where most animal cruelty cases historically resulted in suspended sentences. The defendant, who had previously pleaded guilty, must now serve the two-month sentence immediately.
