Detainee who confessed to murder attacked in Limassol police cells
On the evening of Sunday, November 1, a 43-year-old Syrian national currently in custody at the Limassol police detention centre was attacked in his cell by another inmate. The assailant reportedly struck the 43-year-old in the face, causing a minor head injury. Police officers intervened, and the victim was transported to Limassol General Hospital for medical examination and treatment before being discharged and returned to the facility.
Following the incident, authorities placed the suspect under heightened security and decided to isolate him from other detainees to prevent further confrontations. Investigations are currently underway to determine how the assailant gained access to the cell. While local media outlets report the victim requested that no further investigation be conducted to avoid additional conflict, officials continue to probe the security breach.
The 43-year-old had been remanded in custody for eight days earlier on Sunday following his confession to the murder of 61-year-old Olga Vasilyeva. He reportedly admitted to killing the victim with a hammer after an alleged insult, keeping her body at his home overnight before transporting it to a field in the Saittas area.
