Murder suspect attacked in Limassol detention facility
On the evening of November 1, a 43-year-old Syrian man, who has confessed to the murder of 61-year-old Olga Vasilieva, was attacked by another inmate within the Limassol police detention facility. The suspect sustained minor head injuries and was briefly transported to Limassol General Hospital for medical care before being returned to custody. Following the incident, authorities implemented enhanced security measures, including isolating the 43-year-old to prevent further assaults.
The suspect is currently under an eight-day remand order in connection with the killing of Vasilieva, whose body was discovered in a well in the Moniatis area. Investigations have revealed that the victim was struck with a hammer following a dispute over money, specifically an alleged extortion attempt of €70,000 by the suspect. Authorities have since recovered the victim's mobile phone from the sea near Moni and her handbag in Amathous, both identified based on the suspect's testimony. Police continue to review CCTV footage and scientific evidence as they finalize the case file. The suspect is expected to appear in court again on Monday for a potential extension of his detention as the investigation reaches its final stages.
