Sofia Demetriades wins BBC Young Musician 2026
On November 1, 2026, 18-year-old violinist Sofia Demetriades, a British musician of Cypriot descent, was crowned the winner of the prestigious BBC Young Musician 2026 competition. The final round took place at the Bristol Beacon, where Demetriades performed Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. She was accompanied by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, conducted by Alpesh Chauhan.
The judges praised the soloist for her technical precision, musical sensitivity, and remarkable artistic maturity. This year’s edition of the competition marked a historic milestone in its 48-year history, as the final three contestants were exclusively women. Demetriades’ victory is considered a significant achievement for both the young musician and the Cypriot diaspora in the United Kingdom.
The BBC Young Musician competition has served as a vital platform for discovering emerging classical talent for nearly five decades. Demetriades emerged as the winner after competing against hundreds of other applicants throughout the multi-stage selection process leading up to the final event.
