Sofia Demetriades wins the 2026 BBC Young Musician competition
Eighteen-year-old violinist Sofia Demetriades was named the winner of the BBC Young Musician 2026 competition on Sunday, November 1. Held at the Bristol Beacon, the final showcased Demetriades performing Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto alongside the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, conducted by Alpesh Chauhan. The jury praised her for her technical proficiency, musical maturity, and expressive interpretation. This victory marks a significant achievement for the UK-based Cypriot diaspora, to which the musician belongs.
This year’s edition of the competition was historic, as the final trio consisted entirely of female musicians for the first time in the event's 48-year history. Alongside Demetriades, the finalists included 17-year-old recorder player Alma Naidu Debreczeni and 18-year-old saxophonist Kezia Colton. The selection process began with hundreds of video applications, from which forty musicians were chosen for live auditions at Bath Spa University before the final eight were selected.
Demetriades’ success is widely celebrated within the Cypriot community, highlighting the rising profile of young musicians of Cypriot descent on the international stage. The BBC Young Musician competition remains a premier platform for identifying emerging classical talent, and this win serves as a major milestone in the young violinist's burgeoning career.
