Fuel price trends and legislative proposals for receipt transparency in Cyprus
Recent data from the Cyprus Consumer Protection Service shows a modest decline in fuel prices over the past two weeks. Director Constantinos Karagiorgis reported that the average price for 95-octane unleaded gasoline has fallen to €1.719 per liter, a reduction of approximately 4.1 cents, while diesel has seen a smaller decrease to an average of €2.002 per liter. The service continues to monitor the market and the application of excise tax reductions.
Simultaneously, a legislative proposal submitted by DISY parliament member and Energy Committee chair Nikos Georgiou seeks to mandate greater transparency on fuel receipts. The bill proposes that retailers explicitly list the base price, excise duty, VAT, and other fees on every receipt. This initiative aims to clarify the breakdown of costs for consumers, as the state seeks to enhance market transparency without imposing price caps or direct tax changes.
Industry stakeholders, including the Pancyprian Association of Petrol Station Owners, led by Savvas Prokopiou, have welcomed the proposal. However, professionals suggest that receipts must also delineate the profit margins of petrol stations and fuel companies to avoid misleading consumers. Discussions are ongoing within the parliamentary Commerce Committee to address technical implementation concerns and ensure the policy provides a clear picture of all pricing components.
