Annita Demetriou withdraws from 2028 presidential race amid DISY internal tensions
Annita Demetriou, President of the Democratic Rally (DISY) and Speaker of the House, has announced her decision to withdraw from the race for the 2028 presidential nomination. The announcement follows weeks of internal turmoil within the party, which she described as a political minefield characterized by infighting and tensions. Demetriou cited the need to ensure party unity as the primary reason for her departure from the nomination contest, though she remains committed to her position as party leader.
Addressing widespread rumors of personal blackmail, Demetriou categorically rejected these claims, labeling them as baseless and malicious attempts to harm her political career. She also openly admitted feeling hurt by the actions of prominent party figure Averof Neophytou, but pledged that he would receive her full support if he becomes the party’s official candidate. Furthermore, she ruled out the possibility of DISY supporting an AKEL candidate in the second round of the upcoming presidential elections and confirmed her intent to seek re-election as the leader of DISY.
While some political observers argued that her withdrawal was a strategic error, Demetriou emphasized that she remains focused on the party’s reconstruction. The situation highlights ongoing fractures within the center-right party, as it navigates complex leadership dynamics ahead of the 2028 election cycle.
