Greek-American candidates secure major victories in US midterm elections
The United States held midterm elections on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, featuring over 50 candidates of Greek descent competing across 20 states. The election results highlighted a significant Greek-American presence in the U.S. political landscape, with seven individuals winning seats in the Senate and the House of Representatives.
A key highlight was the victory of Democrat Chris Pappas in New Hampshire, who defeated Republican John E. Sununu for the Senate seat previously held by Jeanne Shaheen. Pappas, previously a four-term member of the House, became the first openly gay man elected to the Senate. In his victory speech, he criticized corporate influence, health care cuts, and presidential leadership. Other notable successful candidates include Nicole Malliotakis, Gus Bilirakis, Mike Haridopolos, Jimmy Patronis, and Dina Titus, representing districts in New York, Florida, and Nevada.
The election of these representatives is viewed as important for Greece and Cyprus, as many have a track record of parliamentary action regarding relations between the U.S., Athens, and Nicosia. The candidates represented both the Democratic and Republican parties, focusing their campaigns on issues such as the cost of living.
