Sofia Demetriades wins BBC Young Musician 2026
On November 1, 2026, 18-year-old British-Cypriot violinist Sofia Demetriades was crowned the winner of the BBC Young Musician 2026 competition. Performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto accompanied by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, she competed in the contest's first-ever all-female final, facing 18-year-old saxophonist Kezia Colton and a 17-year-old recorder player. The performance took place under the baton of conductor Alpesh Chauhan.
The competition jury, which included pianist Joanna MacGregor, lauded Demetriades for her technical precision, musical maturity, and exceptional command of color and style. As the winner, she receives a prize of 3,000 pounds toward her musical education, alongside professional recording and broadcast opportunities via BBC Radio 3. Furthermore, all three finalists will receive career development support from the Young Classical Artists Trust.
Demetriades, who celebrated her 18th birthday during the quarter-final stage, is the first violinist to win this prestigious title since 2004. This victory marks a significant milestone in her career, offering her a platform for professional growth within the classical music industry.
