Limassol court sentences man to 13 years for murdering father
On November 3, 2026, the Limassol Criminal Court sentenced a 49-year-old man to 13 years in prison for the murder of his 80-year-old father, Giorgos Hadjigeorgiou. The incident took place in the early hours of July 9, 2025, when the defendant stabbed his father multiple times while he was asleep in their home. Following the act, the perpetrator immediately contacted the Limassol Criminal Investigation Department (CID) via mobile phone to confess to the crime and surrender to authorities.
During the trial, the court reviewed psychiatric evaluations which indicated that the defendant, who suffers from schizophrenia, did not experience diminished responsibility. The court determined that his mental health issues did not impact his ability to perceive the consequences of his actions or his legal responsibility. Although there was no evidence of premeditation, the court acknowledged the brutality of the act, which was carried out without provocation.
In delivering the sentence, the court considered the defendant's immediate admission of guilt, his remorse, and his personal history, noting that he was not a career criminal. The defense argued the act was connected to past experiences with his father. However, the court maintained that the defendant was fully aware of his actions at the time of the stabbing, leading to the final 13-year custodial sentence.
