Cyprus Road Transport Department announces vehicle recalls due to safety risks
The Cyprus Department of Road Transport has initiated a series of vehicle recalls following reports from the European Safety Gate system. During the 42nd and 43rd weeks of 2026, seventeen vehicle models, including passenger cars, motorcycles, and light commercial vehicles, were identified as posing significant risks, primarily related to fire hazards and potential injuries. Manufacturers and distributors have been ordered to take immediate action to notify owners and facilitate the recall process.
Furthermore, in early November 2026, the department issued a specific urgent recall for 52 vehicles equipped with defective Takata airbags. These components are prone to inflator ruptures, which can result in the projection of metal fragments, posing a lethal threat to passengers. Affected owners were contacted directly via SMS through the department's database.
Authorities strongly advise owners of vehicles with defective Takata airbags to cease using their cars immediately until the faulty parts are replaced. Owners can verify if their vehicle is affected by checking the European Safety Gate portal or contacting the Department of Road Transport directly at 22807000 or via email at recalls@rtd.mcw.gov.cy. The department continues to monitor the market to ensure all safety standards are met for the protection of drivers and public road safety.
