Famagusta regional official criticizes government over stalled university project
The District Organization of Local Self-Government (EOA) of Famagusta has publicly criticized the Cypriot government for the lack of progress regarding the establishment of two university schools in the region. In a statement issued on November 3, 2026, the organization highlighted that 20 months have passed since the President of the Republic announced these projects in February 2025, yet no tangible results or clear timelines have been provided.
Giannis Karousos, president of the EOA Famagusta, stated that the district is being treated as a second-class region. The local authorities expressed particular frustration by contrasting the inactivity in Famagusta with the ongoing progress of a new Cyprus University of Technology (TEPAK) school currently being developed in Larnaca. While the EOA welcomes development in other districts, it rejects what it describes as the unequal treatment of Famagusta.
Local officials are now demanding immediate official clarification and a firm schedule for the implementation of the promised educational facilities. The situation remains unresolved, with local authorities continuing to pressure the administration to fulfill its initial commitments to ensure equal educational opportunities for the region.
