Eurozone begins search for successor to ECB President Christine Lagarde
The search for the next president of the European Central Bank (ECB) has officially commenced following Christine Lagarde's announcement that she will step down on February 7, 2027. Although her current term was scheduled to conclude in October 2027, the early departure has accelerated the selection process for her successor.
Eurogroup President Kyriakos Pierrakakis has invited eurozone member states to submit their nominations by November 6, 2026. The candidacies are set to be reviewed by finance ministers during the Eurogroup meeting scheduled for November 9. Following this preliminary discussion, the process will involve recommendations by the EU Council and consultations with the European Parliament and the ECB Governing Council before a final appointment is made by the European Council.
This leadership transition comes as the ECB faces a critical period, making the appointment a significant focus of the European economic agenda. The process is now in full motion, triggered by a formal letter sent by Lagarde on October 29 to the European Council President, setting the stage for a thorough vetting of candidates in the coming weeks.
