Administrative court upholds dismissal of Palaichori-Oreinis community leader
On November 3, 2026, the Administrative Court of Cyprus rejected a request from the former community leader of Palaichori-Oreinis to suspend his dismissal. The official, who was elected in 2024, sought to overturn the decision made by the District Officer of Nicosia to remove him from office.
The dismissal followed the discovery that the leader had a prior criminal conviction for an offense involving dishonesty or moral turpitude. According to the Law on Communities, such a conviction mandates automatic removal from office. The court determined that the applicant failed to prove "manifest illegality" or "irreparable damage" that would justify suspending the District Officer's decision. The ruling emphasized that potential damage to an individual's political reputation is not considered irreparable, as it can be rectified if the leader eventually wins his main legal challenge.
The court further held that the public interest—specifically the smooth and ethically sound operation of local government—outweighs any personal consequences for the petitioner. Consequently, the dismissal remains in full effect while the final court proceedings regarding the appeal continue.
