DISY president meets with UN envoy to discuss Cyprus negotiations
On Tuesday, Annita Demetriou, President of the Democratic Rally (DISY), held a meeting with Maria Angela Holguin, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, at the DISY headquarters in Nicosia. The discussion focused on the current status of the Cyprus problem and the efforts being made to resume formal negotiations. Demetriou expressed concern over the lack of progress toward the next step, which would involve the convocation of a new 5+1 informal conference before the end of the Secretary-General's term.
Demetriou emphasized that the current political window must be utilized effectively and urged for the preservation of the negotiation acquis and the prospect of a solution. She underscored the need for a more substantial involvement of the European Union, specifically through increased pressure on Turkey. According to Demetriou, the EU should signal to Ankara that further progress on its European ambitions is contingent upon abandoning its current obstructionist stance regarding the negotiations.
