Diplomatic tension in Cyprus following envoy's meeting with Turkish representative
Maria Angela Holguin, the personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Cyprus, has sparked significant controversy following her visit to the Turkish embassy in the occupied territories of Cyprus, where she met with the Turkish representative, Ali Murat Basceri. The Greek Cypriot side and legal experts characterized the meeting as a serious diplomatic error and a potential violation of UN Security Council Resolution 550, which does not recognize the secessionist entity. Holguin later clarified that she acted upon direct instructions from Ankara to receive a message, a procedure she explained to President Nikos Christodoulides.
Despite the controversy, intensive diplomatic efforts are underway ahead of a trilateral meeting scheduled for November 9, which aims to facilitate a new five-party conference. Discussions are currently focusing on the opening of four potential new crossing points, including Myrtou, Athienou-Aglantzia, Louroujina, and Kampos-Karavostasi, as part of confidence-building measures. Meanwhile, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is expected to visit the occupied territories this Friday to meet with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, further highlighting the heightened diplomatic activity surrounding the search for a path to resume formal negotiations.
