UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin visits Turkish embassy in occupied Cyprus
United Nations Secretary-General's Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, visited the Turkish "embassy" in the occupied northern part of Cyprus on November 3, 2026, to meet with the Turkish representative, Ali Murat Basceri. The meeting, which aimed to exchange views on the Cyprus issue, drew criticism from some local media sources, which argued that such actions conflict with UN Security Council resolutions. President Nicos Anastasiades reportedly raised the issue during his subsequent 30-minute meeting with Holguin, seeking clarification on the nature of the visit.
Holguin explained to President Christodoulides that she visited the diplomatic mission after receiving information that she might receive a message from the Turkish side, possibly involving Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Mehmet Kemal Bozay. Following her discussions at the Presidential Palace, Holguin characterized the meeting as a brief session intended to ask specific, direct questions rather than conducting them over the phone. She expressed cautious optimism regarding the ongoing diplomatic efforts, noting that she is scheduled to meet with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman on Wednesday to continue her consultations.
