UN envoy meets with Turkish official in occupied Cyprus amid diplomatic tension
UN Secretary-General's personal envoy Maria Angela Holguin is currently in Cyprus for a series of high-level meetings regarding the ongoing peace process. On November 3, 2026, Holguin met with the Turkish ambassador in the occupied territories, Ali Murat Basceri. This meeting drew strong criticism from the Nicosia government, with government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis calling the action unacceptable and a violation of UN Security Council resolutions, including resolution 550. President Nikos Christodoulides expressed his dissatisfaction directly to Holguin during their subsequent 30-minute meeting at the Presidential Palace.
Holguin defended her meeting with the Turkish official by explaining that she was informed the Turkish side intended to deliver a specific message. During her meeting with President Christodoulides, she stated that she visited primarily to ask him several specific questions in person. Looking ahead, Holguin is scheduled to meet again with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman on Wednesday. These efforts are part of preparations for a potential trilateral meeting and an enlarged 5+1 summit aimed at reviving negotiations before the end of the year.
