Cyprus and France advance defense cooperation agreement
On November 3, 2026, the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus discussed the ratification of a defense cooperation agreement with the French Republic. This agreement, known as the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA), is intended to establish a formal framework for closer operational cooperation between the two nations.
Giorgos Karoullas, the President of the Committee and a member of the DISY party, emphasized the geopolitical significance of this strategic partnership. During the session, which included representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense, as well as the Law Office of the Republic, officials highlighted that strengthening ties with European allies is a strategic necessity for regional stability. The agreement is framed as a key initiative to address security challenges in the Eastern Mediterranean, reflecting Cyprus's long-standing policy of fostering Western and European defense integration.
The ratification process is the first step toward implementing the agreement. Following this committee review, the proposal is expected to proceed through the legislative process for final approval, marking a formalization of military ties that have been evolving over time to bolster security in the Eastern Mediterranean basin.
