Authorities warn of synthetic cannabinoids in vaping products in Cyprus
The Cyprus Addictions Authority (AAEK) has issued an urgent public warning following the discovery of dangerous synthetic cannabinoids in vaping liquids and herbal products sold within the country. The findings emerged from a series of joint inspections conducted by the AAEK in coordination with the Cyprus Police, Pharmaceutical Services, and Health Services at various shops specializing in CBD and related products.
Laboratory analyses revealed that these products contain unregulated substances with potentially severe health impacts. Notably, one specific vaping liquid was found to contain a mixture of six different cannabinoids. Experts express grave concern that consumers often perceive these items as low-risk; however, their actual composition is unknown and potentially toxic. The substances identified can lead to adverse health effects, including tachycardia, extreme drowsiness, confusion, anxiety, and panic.
This development comes amidst rising concerns about the popularity of vaping among youth, with AAEK President Dr. Christos Minas noting that commercial promotion of these devices has outpaced scientific oversight. Authorities are continuing their investigations to monitor the market and prevent the sale of these hazardous, unlabelled substances to the public.
