Cyprus drug authority issues warning over cannabinoids in vaping products
The Cyprus Addictions Authority (AAEK) has issued a public warning following the detection of new, potentially dangerous cannabinoids in vaping liquids and plant-based products sold in the local market. The findings were made during inspections conducted in early November 2026 by the AAEK in coordination with the Cyprus Police, Pharmaceutical Services, and Health Services.
During these joint operations, authorities confiscated various items from stores specializing in CBD and related products, including electronic cigarette liquids, cigarette-ready plant material, and other herbal substances. Laboratory analysis revealed the presence of synthetic cannabinoids with unknown compositions. Most notably, researchers identified six different types of cannabinoids within a single vaping liquid. The Authority expressed grave concern, noting that these products are often marketed as low-risk or natural, yet they contain powerful psychoactive substances with largely unknown health effects and potential risks for serious adverse reactions.
The AAEK emphasized that the presence of these substances in retail stores does not guarantee their safety or legality. The investigation into the origin of these goods and their distribution channels remains ongoing as authorities continue to monitor the market to prevent the public from consuming these potentially harmful substances.
