Medical students protest at parliament over university clinic legislation
On November 5, 2026, medical students from the University of Cyprus held a demonstration outside the parliament building to demand improvements to a pending bill regarding the establishment of university clinics and hospitals. The students, who support the legislative move after over a decade of delays, submitted a memorandum to the House Health Committee chair, Savia Orphanidou, expressing concerns that the current version of the bill could compromise educational and clinical quality.
The students highlighted two primary requirements: ensuring that each hospital has one lead medical school responsible for research and training, and mandating a minimum staffing level of at least three university doctors per clinical unit. During the committee's article-by-article discussion, the parliamentary body unanimously adopted the provision for a single lead medical school per hospital. This decision aligns with the Ministry of Health's position and represents a significant step forward in the legislative process.
The demand regarding minimum staffing levels remains under consideration as the committee continues its deliberations. The goal is to finalize the bill by the end of the year and bring it to a full parliamentary vote, establishing a long-awaited framework for university-led medical infrastructure in Cyprus.
