Corruption investigation involving Xoriatiko bakery chain revealed in Greece
Greek authorities have uncovered a sprawling criminal network led by 57-year-old Angelos Giannakopoulos, the owner of the popular bakery chain "Xoriatiko." An 800-page case file details illegal profits exceeding 70 million euros, with authorities seizing hidden assets inside a bakery near the Kifisos river. The investigation by the Internal Affairs Department revealed that the organization operated for years under the protection of corrupt state officials, including police officers and personnel from the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) and the EFKA.
New evidence discovered in a bookkeeping office on Heyden Street highlights the extent of the corruption. Investigators found a handwritten list featuring 25 names of AADE officials in regions including Attica, Mykonos, Glyfada, and Lamia, alongside specific payment amounts ranging from 8,000 to 60,000 euros. Notes recovered labeled as "transactions following the boss's orders" suggest a systemic bribery scheme. The suspect, who had previously violated restrictive measures to flee abroad, reportedly left a provocative note targeting official Michalis Chrisochoidis prior to his arrest. The case is currently under active investigation to identify all implicated officials and trace the full flow of illicit funds.
