Greece resumes research for the Great Sea Interconnector project
Greece is moving forward with the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) electrical interconnection project between Greece and Cyprus, with preparations underway to resume underwater research. The French-flagged survey vessel, Abeille Marengo, is stationed at the port of Heraklion, awaiting the official issuance of a NAVTEX, which is expected to occur between November 7 and 8, 2026. This directive will enable the vessel to immediately begin surveying the seabed.
The project is proceeding under the guidance of a special inter-ministerial committee, which was tasked with reviewing licensing applications by November 6, 2026. Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis has been categorical that the project is secure and will move forward as planned. He further stated that if Turkey attempts to obstruct the cable-laying operations, Greece will implement operational interventions to ensure the work continues. Diplomatic efforts and trilateral coordination between Greece, Cyprus, and France have been intensified to facilitate the project's progress.
The current phase follows a period of stagnation after similar surveys were interrupted by Turkish interference in 2024. Recent reports suggest that diplomatic channels have been utilized to notify the Turkish side of the upcoming operations, with some sources indicating that this communication may help avoid past tensions. The project is considered strategically vital for ending the energy isolation of Cyprus.
