Greek FM reaffirms commitment to Great Sea Interconnector project
Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis confirmed on November 3, 2026, that the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) project, linking Greece and Cyprus, will proceed as planned. During a closed-door briefing with the Parliamentary Committees on Foreign Affairs and Defense, Gerapetritis emphasized that the necessary permits for the submarine cable installation have already been issued, ensuring the project's continuity.
The minister issued a firm warning regarding potential regional interference, specifically addressing concerns about Turkish attempts to obstruct operations. He stated that Greece is prepared to implement necessary operational measures to protect the project and ensure its completion, highlighting the strategic importance of the energy link for regional stability.
This statement follows increased legislative scrutiny regarding the status of the interconnector. Gerapetritis's assurances aim to address political concerns and clarify that, despite external security challenges and potential tensions with Ankara, the government remains committed to the technical and strategic realization of this critical infrastructure initiative.
