Authorities investigate assault of primary school student in Nicosia
On November 3, 2026, an incident of school violence occurred at a primary school in Nicosia, where an 11-year-old girl was allegedly beaten by classmates. According to the girl's father, who filed a formal complaint at the Omorfita police station, the attack involved five students during athletic activities. The victim was taken to Nicosia General Hospital, where medical examinations revealed abrasions, bruising, and a concussion. Some reports, including those from the Cyprus Mail, also mentioned blood in her urine. The student has since been discharged.
While official police reports consistently refer to four attackers, the victim's father claims this was the second attack, with an earlier incident involving three students occurring two weeks prior. The father alleged that school management previously dismissed his concerns as an "unfortunate incident" and claimed the child's reaction was excessive. He further noted that no teachers were supervising the area during the latest assault, which was eventually stopped by other students.
Because the alleged perpetrators are under the age of 14, they bear no criminal liability under Cypriot law. The case is currently being handled by the Ministry of Education and Social Welfare Services, who are working in coordination with the police to manage the situation and ensure the student's safety.
