Investigation launched after student assault at Nicosia primary school
On November 3, 2026, an 11-year-old girl was physically assaulted by five classmates at an elementary school in Nicosia during a break. The incident reportedly occurred after the victim celebrated a goal during a football game. The student was transported to the hospital, where medical staff treated her for a concussion, bruising, and hematuria before discharging her. The victim's parents allege this was the third such attack in 15 days, claiming prior incidents involving fewer students were dismissed by school management as minor disputes.
According to the family, no teacher was present to prevent the attack, and the girl was saved only after other students intervened. The Ministry of Education has formally requested a factual report on the incident, and district inspectors along with educational psychologists have been dispatched to the school to address the situation. While the family remains highly critical of the school's handling of the repeated violence, ministry officials state that investigations are ongoing to reconcile conflicting accounts of the events and ensure student safety. The case has also triggered broader political concerns regarding school violence protocols in Cyprus.
