Marios Ioannou Elia appointed as chairman of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra
Composer Marios Ioannou Elia has recently been appointed as the new chairman of the board of directors of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra. In his first statements following the appointment, Elia outlined his vision for the institution, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts and the role of culture in societal development.
Elia brings extensive international experience to his new role, having previously served as artistic director for the German company m:con – mannheim:congress GmbH. During his tenure there, he managed an annual budget of €80 million and oversaw approximately 100 employees, an experience he describes as pivotal in his transition from creative musical composition to institutional management. He noted that the responsibilities of administrative leadership, such as resource management and personnel oversight, are natural extensions of his artistic career.
The new chairman aims to establish conditions for sustainable cultural growth that leave a lasting impact. His current focus remains on integrating his artistic background with the administrative demands of the orchestra to foster a more meaningful engagement between the institution and the public, ensuring that culture becomes a vital component of broader social development.
