Sergeant to be sentenced for neglect of duty in 2019 Stylianos case
A 58-year-old police sergeant is set to be sentenced on November 30, 2026, after pleading guilty to neglect of duty regarding the 2019 death of 14-year-old Stylianos Constantinou. The officer, who was stationed at the Pera Chorio police station at the time, admitted on October 15, 2026, to failing to investigate a prior suicide attempt by the teenager.
During court proceedings on November 4, 2026, prosecutors argued that the defendant failed to take necessary actions after being informed of the boy's earlier attempt involving a hunting rifle, specifically neglecting to investigate the teenager's access to the firearm. Defense attorney Elias Stefanou presented arguments for a mitigated sentence, and the prosecution, represented by Eleni Constantinou, outlined the officer's failure to perform his professional duties.
The court has reserved its judgment following the final submissions from both sides. The sentencing hearing is scheduled to take place at 08:30 on the final day of November, marking the conclusion of these legal proceedings.
