Cyprus government approves 4.8 million euro waste management funding
On November 4, 2026, the Council of Ministers in Cyprus approved a government funding package totaling 4.8 million euros to enhance recycling and waste management infrastructure across the country. The initiative, overseen by the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, is scheduled for implementation over the three-year period from 2027 to 2029.
The funds are split into two primary allocations: 1.5 million euros will support local communities and clusters in the collection, transport, and management of recyclable materials, while 3.3 million euros are dedicated to the separate collection and processing of organic waste. According to Agriculture Minister Christos Senekis, the measure is designed to assist local authorities in meeting their waste management obligations while minimizing the immediate financial burden on citizens during this transition.
The policy forms part of a broader shift toward a circular economy model. During the announcement, Minister Senekis also noted that the government intends to implement the “Pay as you throw” scheme as soon as possible, which will require residents to use specific bin bags for their waste. The funding is contingent upon the achievement of measurable goals to ensure the efficient use of public resources.
